Proverb Hydration Pro Moisturiser Christmas Special Gift Set Review

I had high hopes for posting this review the week after I moved house to give you guys the chance to get shopping in time for Christmas but life just got super hectic, I’m sorry! 2 weeks later and I am officially that lame-o person that posts things way too late. Anyway, if you’re still looking for some amazing skincare Chrimbo gifts for your man, dad, brother, grandad, or just well, anyone then the Proverb Hydration Pro Moisturiser Christmas Special Gift Set is what you’re after. At just £55 you’ll get Proverb’s Hydration Pro Moisturiser plus a FREE Cleanse and Shave Nutrient Mud saving you a whopping £30! Unlike most lovely natural brands, all of Proverb’s products are lab proven natural and organic.

…these products are perfect for the health conscious male that’s busting out WOD’s left right and centre, and sippin’ on those late night kale smoothies.

But Proverb don’t stop there – with an ingredients list so clean you could whack it all in your Nutribullet (please actually don’t do this it won’t taste nice even if it is good for you) – these products are perfect for the health conscious male that’s busting out WOD’s left right and centre, and sippin’ on those late night kale smoothies. They’re for the man that knows you get out what you put in and probably can’t be arsed, nor has the time, to decipher a bazillion ingredients on his skin care product labels. If I’m going to be honest, I know I don’t.

About Proverb Skin

Proverb Skin was born from an elite sport and sports nutrition perspective and a sports psychology mindset. It’s about the utmost dedication to inside-outside health geared specifically toward men. Founded by both Luke Sherriff, a professional rugby player and human scientist, and his wife Kirstie, a historian who is also the founder of Pinks Boutique – a natural and organic skincare line for women, Proverb Skin has the sweetest launch story.

The pair had met at Oxford University and as their careers blossomed they realised that they could fuse both of their lifestyles to create a skincare line dedicated to just men. Luke had been fuelling his body with organic whole foods and Kirstie had been exploring natural and organic cosmetics – it was a match made in heaven and just last year Proverb was launched.

Proverb Skin is the first male skincare brand in the world to receive the EWG Clean Ingredient Certification. EWG is the leading US authority on health and toxicity of cosmetic ingredients. Proverb is also the first full range of skincare in the UK to receive this certification. All of their products are free from petroleums, parabens, SLS, artificial fragrance, and propylene glycol.

Because Kirstie and Luke are super generous and lovely they’ve been kind enough to give you all a special code that can be entered into the cart. The code ‘PROVERBGSAGE’ will enter you into a giveaway to give you the chance of winning £200 worth of Proverb Products!

Proverb Hydration Pro Moisturiser

I know you’re probably wondering how a woman can test male skincare products, but the ingredients aren’t that far off from their female counterparts. I have to admit I was a little intrigued myself as to how the texture and scent of male products would fare from a female perspective. I was pleasantly surprised.

The Hydration Pro Moisturiser contains complex coconut derived amino acids and peptides to tone, strengthen, and protect dry skin as well as some super moisturising ingredients such hyaluronic acid (see ingredients list below) that help to protect the skin and lock the moisture in. Spirulina co-enzymes work to brighten the complexion whilst battling the ageing process, leaving the skin in peak condition.

The texture of the moisturiser itself is quite thin and milky but was pretty thick once applied to the skin, a little thicker than I was expecting but definitely usable. It sort of left a little non-greasy barrier layer sitting on my skin. I think that both the texture and absorption are perfect for male skin, but for me personally, this is better suited as a night treatment. I’m going to put that down to not having copious amounts of hair on my face…

Ingredients: Aqua (Water), Glycerin, Plukenetia Volubilis (Inca Inchi) Seed Oil, Argania Spinosa (Argan) Kernel Oil, Prunus Armeniaca (Apricot) Kernel Oil, Sesamum Indicum (Sesame) Seed Oil, Ceteary Alcohol, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea) Nut Butter, Cocoyl Hydrolyzed Albumen, Helianthus Annus (Sunflower) Seed Oil Unsaponifiables, Lactobacillus/Tomato Fruit Ferment Extract, Sucrose Cocoate, Coconut Alcohol, Dipalmitoyl Hydroxyproline, Glyceryl Stearate SE, Spirulina Platensis (Spirulina) Extract, Sodium Hyaluronate, Hippophae Rhamnoides (Sea Buckthorn) Fruit Oil, Citrus Aurantium Bergamia (Bergamot) Fruit Oil, Citrus Limon (Lemon) Peel Oil, Eugenia Caryophyllus (Clove) Bud Extract, Lavandula Angustifolia (Lavende4r) Plant Oil, Lavandula Hybrida (Lavandin) Plant Oil, Litsea Cubeba (Mountain Pepper) Fruit Oil, Methyl Anthranilate, Citrus Aurantium Dulcis (Sweet Orange) Peel Oil, Pogostemom Cablin (Patchouli) Oil, Citrus Aurantium Amara (Bitter Orange) Leaf Oil, Citrus Sinensis (Orange) Peel Extract, Thymus Vulgaris (Thyme) Flower/Leaf Oil, Ocimum Basilicum (Basil) Leaf Oil, Benzyl Acetate, Triethyl Citrate, Cocoglucoside, Sodium Dehydroacetate, Tocopherol, Xanthan Gum, Maltose, Aloe Barbadensis (Aloe Vera) Leaf Gel, Leuconostoc/Radish Root Ferment Filtrate, Agave Tequilana Leaf Extract, Dextrin, Sodium Citrate, Sodium Phosphate, Limonene, Linalool, Citral, Eugenol, and Geraniol.

The one thing that really shocked me was how taught my face felt after using this, my skin wasn’t dry but it had really toned up temporarily which I personally didn’t like the feel of and ended up putting a slightly lighter moisturiser on top to alleviate the sensation. The results, however, were pretty impressive. I’m quite tempted to use this on my body rather than my face so look out for an update in the future on this!

If you’re a guy, however, you’re going to love this and I know that for a fact as I’ve had my partner test the products out too which he loved. They say that this is suitable for normal to dry skin but as I’m combination skin I can say that this won’t leave you greasy and if anything it will leave your skin slightly matte. You get 50ml of product that Proverb says should last about 4-6 weeks which I think sounds about right, and so as a long-term investment I don’t think the price is too bad.

Proverb Cleanse and Shave Nutrient Mud

Men’s Grooming Winner of the 2018 Beauty Shortlist Awards, the Proverb Skin Cleanse and Shave Mud is hands down my favourite products of the two. It’s a creamy, deep cleansing and nutrient-rich facial wash and shaving cream that somehow manages to refine the pores without taking away any moisture from the face.

I found it really hydrating and my skin felt soft and supple after – not dried out in the slightest! It feels like the perfect deep cleanser for winter.

The ingredients list is pretty mental (see below), in fact, it’s massive but don’t let that put you off. Basically, it has a lot of all natural ingredients such as kaolin to help draw impurities and a mixture of fruit, nut, and seed oils and butters that enrich your skin with vitamins and fatty acids to keep it healthy and moisture rich. These oils also help the razor to glide over the skin without tugging. Although I don’t shave my face I do shave my legs and it’s such a gentle and enriching process with the Cleanse and Shave Nutrient Mud. Although ladies, exfoliate first because it will clog your razor up!

Ingredients: Aqua (Water), Kaolin, Glycerin, Canola (Rapeseed) Oil, Prunus Dulcis (Sweet Almond) Kernel Oil, Hydrogenated Vegetable Oil, Zinc Oxide, Persea Gratissima (Avocado) Fruit Oil, Simmondsia Chinesis (Jojoba) Seed Oil, Cetearyl Alcohol, Cetearyl Glucoside, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea) Butter, Cera Alba (Beeswax), Cocoyl Hydrolyzed Albumen, Glyceryl Stearate, Olea Europaea (Olive) Fruit Oil, Euterpe Oleracea (Acai Palm) IKernel Oil, Sesamum Indicum (Sesame) Seed Oil, Plukenetia Volubilis (Inca Inchi) Seed Oil, Lcatobacillus/Tomato Fruit Ferment Extract, Pseudoalteromonas Ferment Extract, Sodium Dehydroacetate, Hectorite, Sucrose Cocoate, Benzyl Acetate, Citrus Aurantium Bergamia (Bergamot) Fruit Oil, Citrus Limon (Lemon) Peel Oil, Eugenia Caryophyllus (Clove) Bud Extract, Lavandula Angustifolia (Lavender) Plant Oil, Lavandula Hybrida (Lavandin) Plant Oil, Litsea Cubeba (Mountain Pepper) Fruit Oil, Methyl Anthranilate, Citrus Aurantium Dulcis (Sweet Orange) Peel Oil, Pogostemom Cablin (Patchouli) Oil, Citrus Aurantium Amara (Bitter Orange) Leaf Oil, Citrus Sinensis (Orange) Peel Extract, Thymus Vulgaris (Thyme) Flower/Leaf Oil, Ocimum Basilicum (Basil) Leaf Oil, Triethyl Citrate, Tocopherol, Leuconostoc/Radish Root Ferment Filtrate, Caprylyl Glycol, Limonene, Linalool, and may contain +/- Citric Acid.

When used on my face I found it really hydrating and my skin felt soft and supple after – not dried out in the slightest! It feels like the perfect deep cleanser for winter. If like me you have combination skin you might find that during colder months you find it harder to clean out your pores without totally drying the rest of your skin out. This totally solves that problem and it’s so easy to use too. Plus it smells amazing – if you’re a Lush fan this smells just like their ‘Karma’ range. It’s really uplifting yet not so uplifting that you won’t want to use it in the evening.

If you’re a guy I can imagine this being able to soak through and soften the facial hairs enough to make the shaving process way easier whilst nourishing through the tougher layers of skin and removing any dirt, allowing your skin to breathe. And we all know breathing is pretty important.

The tube comes with a generous 100ml and should last 4-5 weeks if used as directed on the Proverb Skin site. Personally, I think that this is a right bargain – it’s a multitasking product that really works and it doesn’t get much better than that.

You can grab yourself the Cleanse and Shave Nutrient Mud for just £20 whilst it’s on offer (it’s usually £30) along with a couple of free samples or, alternatively grab it for free along with the Proverb Hydration Pro Moisturiser Christmas Special Gift Set here

The Verdict

Both of the Proverb Skin products were amazing but the Cleanse and Shave Nutrient Mud was a clear winner for me – you come away feeling clean and moisturised in one! It’s a great product for both men and women and one I think I’ll personally be using. The Hydration Pro Moisturiser definitely performs well but due to my lack of facial hair and thinner female skin, I felt like this was certainly more suited toward male skin. Having said that it makes a mean hand cream ladies and a lush night treatment!

The packaging is slick and modern, I’m not really one for overly girly designs and pastel colours so this was a breath of fresh air for me and I loved the black gift box that the products came in. The pump style tubes are great for seeing how much product is left and are recyclable, however, I would have to question whether or not my local council would accept this kind of packaging because they’re super picky. The outer packaging is cardboard though so no worries there! With the way sustainability is moving forward in green beauty I’d love to see Proverb move to non-plastic packaging such as biodegradable sugar cane.

Overall I was really happy with the products, the Lush-esque scent keeps bringing me back for more and the Cleanse and Shave Mud is now my favourite cleanser, and I own a lot of them. The Hydration Pro Moisturiser is going to be my go-to hand cream, especially with the amount of time I spend outdoors in the cold, but also so I can just sit here and sniff my hands.

Proverb Skin is an amazingly forward-thinking male organic and natural skincare brand and I can’t wait to see what they have in store for the future.
