I was only sent 3 out of the 4 shots so I won’t be able to give you a review of the Defence shot. However, I’m super excited to try out the other 3, in particular, probably the Pre-Workout shot the most as I’ve never had anything like that before. I workout quite a few times a week and I do take a pre-workout powder if I’m doing anything intense such as kettlebells, or most recently I’ve been training to run a 5K with a 20kg weighted vest so as you can imagine I need that little extra boost. I also add in some creatine on those days too.

Myvitamins Beauty Collagen Shot (12 x 60ml), £34.99

Now if you have been following me for a while, either on my blog or Insta, then you’ll know that I’m a huge marine collagen fan and take marine collagen powder daily. In fact, back in April, I did write a little review of the Myvitamins Marine Collagen Powder and created a rather delicious Marine Collagen Hazelnut Chocolate Spread recipe with it too. So, I’m definitely no stranger to a little marine collagen, it’s something that’s been in my beauty and joint support arsenal for quite some time.

Marine collagen contains the amino acids glycine, proline and hydroxyproline. All of which make up to 75% of our skin’s support structure.

Having said that, the Myvitamins Beauty Collagen Shot, however, is a bit different – it contains 5000mg marine collagen, 25mg hyaluronic acid, pantothenic acid, biotin, and a few other vitamins and minerals, all of which help to support the health of hair, skin, nails, and joints. It also contains something called Bioperine® – essentially it’s piperine – a black pepper extract to aid with absorption meaning that you’ll get more bang for your buck.

Ingredients: Water, Marine Collagen (Fish) (9%), Acidity Regulators (Citric Acid, Malic Acid, Phosphoric Acid), Magnesium Citrate, Preservatives (Potassium Sorbate, Sodium Benzoate), Flavouring, Sweeteners (Acesulfame K, Sucralose, Steviol Glycosides), Stabiliser (Xanthan Gum), Hyaluronic Acid, Niacin, Vitamin E, Zinc, Pantothenic Acid, Sodium Selenate, Vitamin D, Vitamin A, Bioperine®, Vitamin B6, Vitamin B1, Vitamin K, Vitamin B12, Folic Acid, Biotin.

Marine collagen contains the amino acids glycine, proline and hydroxyproline. All of which make up to 75% of our skin’s support structure. From the age of 30, our body stops producing collagen and by the age of 40 we can lose up to 1% of our body’s collagen every year. Not only does this contribute to the ageing process but it can also lead to weaker bones due to loss of bone mass. Collagen can also help to improve your metabolism and thyroid health, stabilise blood sugar, and help to improve mental focus and sleep.

Hyaluronic acid is actually produced by your body too and is largely found in your skin, connective tissue, and even your eyes! It helps to retain water levels and keep the tissues lubricated which means it’s great for both skin and joint health.

… I braved a swig and was pleasantly surprised to find that it tasted really nice. It was tropical heaven, like Malibu without the kick.

Being big on tropical flavours I was super happy to see I’d received the Beauty Collagen Shot in the flavour Coconut & Pineapple but if that isn’t your bag it’s also available in Lemon. I’m not gonna lie I was a little bit worried as to whether or not this was going to taste horrendous. After all, I wouldn’t take 5g of my collagen powder and chug it down in a few tablespoons of water or juice. I tentatively removed the lid and gave it a quick whiff. Which was a huge mistake I’m not gonna lie – it smells like marine collagen that’s being masked by a tiny scent of tropical yumminess. Which is just plain confusing.

I braved a swig and was pleasantly surprised to find that it tasted really nice. It was tropical heaven, like Malibu without the kick. It was very artificially sweet but had enough tartness to cut through the sweetness. The flavour does linger for a little while after but it isn’t unpleasant at all. The texture was slightly thick which I expected from the collagen anyway. Either way, it didn’t make me gip or wretch, which was an absolute winner, and I did actually enjoy the taste more than I expected to.

Because I take collagen and hyaluronic acid supplements it’s really hard to say if this works or not – but in theory, it 100% should.

Myvitamins Pre-Workout Shot (12 x 60ml), £32.99

Being someone who is incredibly active – I walk 15,000+ steps a day and work out a few times a week – I was really excited to try this one out. It’s not just a shot of caffeine, it’s a shot of 200mg caffeine, 3000mg creatine, arginine alpha-ketoglutarate (AAKG), beta-alanine, citrulline malate, and B vitamins. You can check out the full ingredients list below:

Ingredients: Water, Creatine Monohydrate, L-Arginine Alpha-Ketoglutarate (2:1), Beta-Alanine, Acidity Regulators (Malic Acid, Citric Acid, Phosphoric Acid), Citrulline Malate, Whey Protein Isolate (Milk), Caffeine Anhydrous, Preservatives (Potassium Sorbate, Sodium Benzoate), Flavouring, Sweeteners (Acesulfame K, Sucralose, Steviol Glycosides), Colour (Anthocyanins), Vitamin B6, BioPerine® (Black Pepper Extract (Piper nigrum)), Vitamin B12.

Caffeine is often incorporated into pre-workout supplements to help keep you focussed, increasing your alertness and concentration span whilst your body uses creatine as its main energy source whenever performing any sort of anaerobic activity. It also helps increase the production rate of ATP. For those that don’t know ATP provides the energy to drive processes in living cells, such as, you got it – muscle contraction. Therefore creatine is great for increasing physical performance in successive bursts of short term, high-intensity activity. It also helps to draw water into the muscle cells to keep them hydrated and increase protein synthesis which means you’re more likely to fatigue later on into your workout and recover faster afterwards.

… the Myvitamins Pre-Workout Shot gives you more than your bang for your buck. It’s pretty fast-acting – I definitely felt a buzz within a few minutes – and the creatine really helps you go that extra mile.

AAKG is made up of the amino acids L-arginine and A-ketoglutarate, arginine is made by your body already and helps to regulate the production of nitric oxide and expand the diameter of blood vessels in order to increase the blood flow and allow the muscles to receive more oxygen and nutrients. It should help to build muscle mass and enhance performance whereas A-ketoglutarate gives you a big energy boost by increasing the production of cellular energy and also helps to preserve the levels of glutamate – a protein-building amino acid.

The other 2 amino acids in the Pre-Workout shot are citrulline malate, responsible for delaying the onset of fatigue during intense exercise, and beta-alanine which is naturally made by your liver and supplementing with it can increase the levels of carnosine in the muscles. Carnosine helps your muscles to work at their full capacity. And last of all, the B vitamins B6 and B12 have been used to contribute toward a healthy metabolism and reduce the likelihood of tiredness and fatigue, as well as an overloaded immune system.

Now, with all that knowledge let’s see how it tasted and performed. There’s only one available flavour – Sour Berry – and boy is it sour! The first thing that hits you is pure acidity followed by a sweet berry flavour. It’s not at all unpleasant and definitely wakes you up and gets you pumped up and ready for pretty much anything. If you’re into sour sweets then you’ll definitely love this flavour.

But how did it perform? I’m pretty ruthless when I have to write reviews of sports performance-enhancing products. Thankfully the Myvitamins Pre-Workout Shot gives you more than your bang for your buck. It’s pretty fast-acting – I definitely felt a buzz within a few minutes – and the creatine really helps you to go that extra mile. I gave a shot to my wonderful workout hating friend Helen and she said that for the first time in her life she didn’t experience leg cramps whilst running. Personally, I found it gave me that little extra energy I need to keep going. It didn’t give me as much mental clarity as the Myprotein Command Nootropic Powder though. But, if you’re looking for some stamina boosting superpowers – down one of these!

Myvitamins Relax Shot (1 x 60ml), £2.99

Available in Peach flavour the Myvitmains Relax Shot is a health and wellness shot packed with plant extracts, L-Theanine, vitamin E, and a bunch of minerals that help to reduce tiredness, stress, and boost your cognitive abilities. Currently, there are only the single ‘sample’ shots available but I’m sure the multipacks will be back in stock soon.

The taste has to be my favourite out of all 3 – it’s peachy and sweet but has the right level of tartness to cut through the sweetness.

Each shot contains a whopping 1000mg of lemon balm extract which is often used in herbal medicine, as a digestive tonic, to enhance mood, reduce stress, improve memory and concentration, and aid sleep. There’s also 50mg chamomile extract which again is commonly used in herbal medicine to calm nerves and anxiety and aid sleep.

There’s also 150mg of L-Theanine which is an amino acid commonly found in green tea and is known to reduce stress and increase cognitive function and immunity. I was really pleased to also see 100mg of magnesium citrate thrown in. The citrate part is the most important as it’s a form of magnesium that’s used to help calm anxiety and reduce insomnia.

Another notable mention is zinc citrate which has been added in at 10mg but don’t let the low number fool you – it’s actually 100% of your RDA! Zinc citrate is a great anti-inflammatory and is often used in tooth care products but I’m guessing in this case it has been used to help keep the immune system healthy.

You can check out the full ingredients list below:

Ingredients: Water, Lemon Balm Extract (Melissa officinalis L.), Magnesium Citrate, Acidity Regulators (Citric Acid, Malic Acid, Phosphoric Acid), L-Theanine, Flavouring, Preservative (Potassium Sorbate), Stabiliser (Xanthan Gum), Chamomile Extract (Matricaria chamomilla L.), Zinc Citrate, Vitamin E, Sweeteners (Sucralose, Steviol Glycosides).

The taste has to be my favourite out of all 3 – it’s peachy and sweet but has the right level of tartness to cut through the sweetness. It also tasted the least artificial too which I am putting down to the number of herbal extracts and the fact that it is also largely sweetened by honey too. It mainly tastes like peach but the lemon balm cuts through nicely.

Functionality wise I can’t say I can vouch for much at this stage. It was a pleasant drink but I feel like this one needs some regular drinking to reap all of the benefits.

The Verdict

So, first of all, I can safely say that all 3 shots were pretty darn tasty. It’s hard to vouch for the functionality of the Beauty and Relax shots without taking them daily in the long term – a good month or so I reckon. What I can say though is that all of the active ingredients should theoretically work and the levels that are contained within the drinks are definitely sufficient.

The main selling factor in these little shots of joy is their sheer portability. They can easily be stashed in a gym bag, running pouch, handbag – you name it.

The Pre-Workout Shot was my overall favourite – mainly because it had almost instant results – and the taste wasn’t too shabby either. As someone that is highly active, it’s definitely the kind of shot I would purchase again. Sometimes I can do some pretty intense kettlebell routines or long runs and the shot proved to be useful for increasing my stamina vastly. I definitely didn’t experience any fatigue even when sleep deprived which was a nice little hack.

Ingredients wise these shots are pretty clean, however, I’m not the hugest fan of artificial sweeteners and both the Beauty Collagen and Pre-Workout shot contain acesulfame K and sucralose.  Sucralose is actually thought to contribute to the cause of diabetes, increase the risk of IBS and leaky gut, and is actually associated with weight gain. Having said this the amounts in the drink are minimal. Acesulfame K however, is actually 200 times sweeter than sucrose (your regular sugar) and is thought to possibly cause a decline in brain function though more research is needed on this.

Personally, artificial sweeteners are not something I’d want to consume daily and in large quantities and I’m not big on using natural sugars daily either. So I’m happy to throw in the Pre-Workout shot once or twice a week but I don’t like the idea of taking the Beauty Collagen should daily. Everyone has a different opinion on this and it’s certainly for you all to make your own decisions! As always, I’m just here to give you my honest opinion.

The main selling factor in these little shots of joy is their sheer portability. They can easily be stashed in a gym bag, running pouch, handbag – you name it. I’m also not a massive fan of downing copious amounts of liquid when I’m on the go, especially not when I’m working out, so the shots were a massive win in that respect.

So, if you’re looking for a quick and easy, discreet way to get that glow, run that extra mile, or chill the f@*k out the Myvitamins Shots are absolutely for you!
