My 4 Favourite Natural and Organic Lipsticks for Autumn 2018

I’m not one to tell you what to slap on your face or how to live your life. In fact, I think you should be able to wear whatever colour of lipstick you want to wear 365 days of the year. So if you want to rock that bright fuschia lipstick whilst we’re all out here being boring then you go for it ladies (and gents!). But, with sweater season in full swing, I wanted to share my current 4 favourite natural and organic lipsticks for autumn that you can look fab in whilst nourishing those lips simultaneously.

… one morning I woke up with the courage to pop a splash of colour on my face. Now, there’s no looking back and none of these lipsticks are boring…

I’m actually not a massive lipstick wearer, I don’t know why. Maybe because since I switched to non-toxic beauty I just didn’t know where to look. Maybe it’s because I’m always working out and don’t have time to look pretty. Maybe it’s also because I have never possessed the confidence to go there, but one morning I woke up with the courage to pop a splash of colour on my face. Now, there’s no looking back and none of these lipsticks are boring, in fact, they’re all pretty bold colours. Don’t worry though if you’re not the bold lip kinda gal, due to their amazing nourishing formulas, you can still apply them as a subtle lip stain or as a diffused lip if you aren’t feeling all that daring.

I just want you all to know that I am not a makeup artist, in fact, I am utterly useless at makeup so apologies for these cringe-worthy photos and please feel free to laugh at that very last psycho smile one because I totally did. It’s actually the main reason I’ve stayed clear of makeup reviews and posts as I’m not confident in this department but then I realised it’s better to be relatable than an uber beauty queen… plus it’s just way more realistic and I bloody love my lipsticks so I want to share my excitement with you guys too.

Axiology Lipstick in Worth

I’ve had Axiology under my green beauty radar for a hell of a long time, I am constantly amazed at the fact that all of these luxurious-looking lippies are handcrafted by just a very small team. All of their lipsticks have a super nourishing oil based formula that keeps your lips hydrated but also has long-lasting staying power thanks to the really strong mineral pigments. Axiology also donates a percentage of their annual profits to partners like Orangutan Foundation International, PETA, and other humane societies. The paper used for their outer packing is collected from all over Bali (from hotels, offices, and households) in order to reduce trash on the island. It is then taken to a small factory where it’s boiled down to a pulp, dried in the sun, and folded and hand decorated. Axiology has to be the most ethical lipstick company around.

So, I finally plucked up the courage to purchase the shade Worth from Content Beauty whilst they had a bit of a mini sale on the Axiology range. It’s currently sold out from there but don’t worry my fellow UK people it’s also available from Naturisimo at a modest £25. Worth has a luscious texture that feels more like a lip treatment than a lipstick and it has a creamy matte finish. It’s a sort of bright terracotta red with coral and tangerine orange undertones. As I have a neutral olive skin I usually go for orange toned lipsticks as I feel they inject a bit more vibrancy into my face. If you look at the photo above you’ll see that just with one swipe there’s so much pigment that’s perfect for a day look but the more you build it up it turns to a deep brown shade of terracotta which is super sexy with a smoky eye. If you take a look at an old Instagram post of mine here you’ll see the contrast in the application.

Rituel De Fille Enchanted Lip Sheer in Bloodroot

I’ve been obsessed with Rituel de Fille for some time now. Their Instagram is jam-packed full of magical artistic makeup looks that are seriously just absolute works of fine art. Although on the surface they may seem to appeal to a more gothic audience their colours are so universal and versatile.

The main pigment in this lip sheer is from the orange-red powder coated seeds of the achiote tree. The dye has been used in Mayan and Aztec indigenous culture for a long time and you can see why. Bloodroot has a semi-matte texture that applies a whole lot of vibrant amber pigment in one swipe. When you build the colour it’s a really striking blood orange shade that’s so magical to look at. I’d say that it’s easily more pigmented than Axiology’s worth but it is sadly not vegan as it contains carmine (that’s crushed up bugs sadly) and beeswax. It’s worth noting that the areas where cochineal is harvested supports local economies and education, and those areas are scattered across Peru to ensure sustained growth.

All Rituel de Fille products contain phenoxyethanol, as a preservative, which has been known to cause allergies in users and nervous system problems in infants so please do take caution. If you’re pregnant and breastfeeding do not use any products that contain this ingredient! It’s definitely an ingredient to be mindful of and I’ll leave that up to you. I seem to be fine using it but I don’t use products containing phenoxyethanol daily just in case.

This is a shade that screams autumn leaves and big cosy baggy jumpers. It’s a special shade that I pop on when I need to love myself even more. It’s probably my favourite shade of all 4 lipsticks in this round-up. It also doubles up as a nice editorial style eye gloss and even a blush.

Ingredients: Ricinus communis (Castor) Seed Oil, Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil, Annatto (Bixa orellana), Euphorbia Cerifera (Candelilla) Wax, Silicon Dioxide, Carmine [CI 75470], Cera Alba (Beeswax), Carnauba Copernicia Cerifera (Carnauba) Wax, Lavandula Angustifolia (Lavender) Oil, Phenoxyethanol, Caprylyl Glycol, Potassium Sorbate, Hexylene Glycol.

Specs: Made with 99% natural ingredients. Synthetic dye and fragrance-free. Paraben, phthalate, and sulfate free. 100% gluten-free with no risk of cross-contamination. Contains carmine, beeswax, and phenoxyethanol so not suitable for vegans or pregnant/breastfeeding women. Suitable for: Warm and olive/neutral skin tones. Applied as a diffused lip it’s great for work and mumming.

MAHALO Red My Lips Lip Tint

MAHALO’s Red My Lips is a lipstick with a cause worth fighting for, and one that’s close to my heart. Maryna, the founder of MAHALO partnered with the charity Red My Lips in order to help combat rape myths and victim blaming. The global campaign urges men and women worldwide to wear red lipstick in April to raise awareness about sexual violence and speak out against victim-blaming.

The Red My Lips lip tint is described as being an orange and pink toned red matte lipstick to suit all skin tones, complete with a lip plumping infusion. I found it to be slightly blue toned but I don’t know if that’s my weird lip undertones playing tricks on me. It’s scented with the beautiful aroma of dark vanilla and rose, with a faint undertone of Hawaiian jasmine it’s a full-blown sensory experience. It comes encased within a beautiful eco-friendly bamboo packaging with a vegan lip brush and made with 100% natural cruelty-free, and vegan ingredients with some being organic and locally/wildly harvested when available.

It’s more of a creamy matte finish than just a straight up matte and is really moisturising much like the Axiology lipsticks but ever so slightly thicker and more waxy feeling. This has mega staying powder that you’ll need to remove with coconut oil or an oil-based makeup remover. It’s seriously tough stuff! It’s highly fragranced so if you’re the kind of person that doesn’t want to be sniffing roses all day this may not be for you.

Ingredients:

Camellia oleifera (camellia)*, persea gratissima (avocado)*, ricinus communist (castor)*, euphorbia cerifera (candelilla)*, copernicia cerifera (carnauba)*, simmondsia chinensis (jojoba)*, theobroma cacao (cocoa)*, rosa damascena (rose wax), caprylic/capric triglyceride, maranta arundinacea (arrowroot), natural and organic flavors, dipalmitoyl hydroxyproline, euterpe oleracea (acai)*, vitis vinifera (grapeseed)*, non-GMO mixed tocopherols, rosmarinus officinalis (rosemary)*, iron oxides, red 7, mica.

*Clean ingredients: organic + local and/or wild harvested (when available).

Specs: Sustainable bamboo packaging that comes with a vegan lip brush. Natural and organic ingredients, cruelty-free, and vegan. 20% of the profits go to redmylips.org.

Suitable for: All skin tones. Power lip for that important meeting or date.

Where to buy: If you want to feel like Twin Peaks’ Audrey Horne then grab yourself this gorgeous lipstick direct from MAHALO for $45.00 which is roughly £31.00 plus another £19.50 shipping if you’re in the UK.

Rituel De Fille Forbidden Lipstick in Written in Blood

If you want something slightly more vampy that Red My Lips then Written in Blood is for you – it’s a really gorgeous deep blood red shade that’s universally flattering. It has a thicker texture than their Lip Sheers and with one swipe you’ve got instant vamp on the go. The more you build it the deeper and darker you get making it perfect for that autumn to winter transition. It’s definitely the perfect Christmas party red.

I love to wear this a gold eye and tend to save this one for special occasions. It’s my go-to power lip but I don’t think is quite suitable for everyday wear because the texture is thick it requires some warming up to get it swiping evenly and it has a tendency to sort of flake off if you don’t prime your lips well enough. I think it’s best to fill in my lips first with the Kjaer Weis lip pencil in Classic which is pretty much the exact same shade to help make the staying power last throughout the day but also to create a nice shape. In the photo above the lipstick was applied directly from the tube.

Ingredients: Ricinus communis (Castor) Seed Oil, Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil, Carmine (CI 75470), Silica (Silicon Dioxide), Euphorbia Cerifera (Candelilla) Wax, Cera Alba (Beeswax), Carnauba Copernicia Cerifera (Carnauba) Wax, Mica (CI 77019), Titanium Dioxide (CI 77891), Titanium Dioxide (Nano), Lavandula angustifolia (Lavender) Oil, Phenoxyethanol, Caprylyl Glycol, Potassium Sorbate, Hexylene Glycol.

All RDF products are never tested on animals – including their ingredients and they do not outsource any animal testing to outside companies.

Suitable for: All skin tones. Crack this out when you want to rule the world.

Where to buy: The shade Written in Blood is currently available from Naturisimo at £21 in the UK and $24 in the US direct from the RDF site.
