Blueberry CBD Power Balls (Gluten-Free, Paleo, Raw Vegan)

I’m back again with another CBD edible – this time one that you can incorporate into your post-workout recovery program, or just to help pick you up in that midday office slump. That’s right, last month I brought you CBD infused Chocolate Fudge Spread and this month I’m bringing you Blueberry CBD Power Balls which, are totally date free. I don’t know about you, but I’m not a fan of dates in power balls, I don’t really know why but I guess I find them a little too sweet so I used some dried raspberries from the wonderful Urban Fruit who sent the kids and I a huge box of goodies to enjoy.

These Blueberry CBD Power Balls are packed with a big dose of anti-inflammatory CBD oil, blue spirulina, and antioxidant berries to help you recover post workout or just get over that dreaded midday slump.

Kiss goodbye to those over sweet and monotone flavoured power balls that you’ve learned to let into your life and say hello to these beauties. These power balls are packed full of delicious fruity flavour thanks to dried raspberries but also antioxidant-rich freeze-dried blueberry powder for increased mouthwatering tanginess. I also included some blue spirulina which is high in antioxidants and also anti-inflammatory making it another great post-workout ingredient.  Of course, the star of the show is the amazing organic CBD oil from Truth Naturals which has a 0% THC formula and is suspended in MCT oil to ensure optimum absorption. It’s great for DOMS, anxiety and pain relief. If you’re thinking of buying some be sure to use the code GEORGINA10 at the checkout for £10 off your order.

If you’re not familiar with CBD oil let me fill you in…

What is CBD and how can it help me?

Cannabidiol (CBD) is a naturally occurring cannabinoid, yes that’s right – our body produces cannabinoids. Simply put these are compounds that are active components of cannabis. In the late 1980s, scientists discovered the Endocannabinoid System (ECS) within the human body. They found that the ECS continuously maintains balance at a cellular level and is, in fact, active in everyone from before birth to the end of life itself. It is responsible for controlling energy intake, nutrient transportation, metabolism storage and regulates your brain, organ, and musculoskeletal functions. Basically, it’s responsible for a lot of cool stuff that keeps us alive.  Your body knows how and when to make cannabinoids but, for some, their ECS doesn’t work properly and so it struggles to self-regulate. The result? A deficiency in endocannabinoids.

If you don’t have enough endocannabinoids you’re likely to experience pain where you shouldn’t have pain, suffer from anxiety, obesity, have a lower seizure threshold, and experience nausea etc. In fact, a number of common diseases, particularly hyperalgesic ones, that is those with increased sensitivity to pain which is out of proportion to what is going on within the body – i.e. those with no identifiable cause, are linked to a deficiency of endocannabinoids. We’re talking about things such as migraines, IBS, fibromyalgia and inflammatory and immune disorders. This is where CBD comes in. CBD is a homeostatic regulator which balances the ECS. Homeostasis is purely a state of balance and lots of diseases interfere with this balance. It acts as a buffer so it can combat both deficiency and excess within the ECS itself. For example, if you find yourself anxious or depressed your body is likely to be deficient in the neurotransmitter GABA (Gamma-Aminobutyric Acid). CBD interacts with the GABA receptor and amplifies GABA’s natural calming effect. Again CBD can activate the serotonin receptor (serotonin is the stuff that makes you happy)  5-HT1A and induce a calming effect. Personally, I have found CBD helpful for this. CBD is also an excellent anti-inflammatory that doesn’t come with the same risks or side effects of regular NSAIDs (aspirin, diclofenac, ibuprofen etc.) such as; ulcers, heart attacks, and strokes. This makes it really useful for chronic pain management and as an autoimmune disease sufferer, I can vouch for its effectiveness.

Anyway enough of my scientific waffle, I’ll save that for a full-blown article. It’s time to get to the tasty stuff – go forth and make yourself my magical Blueberry CBD Power Balls. Eat 2-4 balls post workout or as needed.

Recipe type: Dessert
Serves: 20
Ingredients
  • 1 cup cashews
  • 1 cup dried raspberries
  • ½ cup ground almonds
  • ½ cup desiccated coconut
  • 2 tbsp organic virgin coconut oil
  • 2 tbsp Raw Nice blue spirulina (or regular spirulina if you can't find this)
  • 1 tbsp freeze-dried blueberry powder
  • 250mg Truth Naturals CBD oil (I used 5ml of 1500mg strength tincture)
  • 10 drops Blueberry Medicine Flower Extract (optional but delicious)
  • Dash of stevia powder (optional if it's not sweet enough for you)
  • Pinch sea salt
Instructions
  1. Place all of the ingredients into the bowl of your food processor and pulse a few times before blending. Scrape down the sides then repeat until the ingredients are fully combined and you reach a smooth dough like consistency that sticks together when squeezed between your thumb and forefinger.
  2. Take a tablespoon of dough at a time, weigh to approximately 21g per ball, and roll the mixture into balls between the palms of your hands. The mixture may be a little crumbly at first so gently pat into ball shapes before applying pressure and rolling. Place onto a non-stick sheet of paper and set to one side whilst you finish making the rest. If you find this method too fiddly feel free to press into a lined brownie tin, chill, then slice into squares. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator and consume within 1 week.
Notes
The recipe makes around 420g of the mixture, 20 balls at 21g each. Each ball contains 12.5mg per ball. You can alter the CBD mg content as you wish. Do not exceed 200mg per day.

I used the 'Natural' flavoured tincture but lemon could also work well too.

*All cup measurements used are UK cup measurements and so 1 cup = 250ml.
