Are you seriously bored of downing the same protein powder mixed with water or milk daily? Me too guys, me too. Thankfully the wonderful folks at Raised Spirit have sent me out some of their scrummy Organic Hemp CACAO Protein Powder (RRP £18.59) which is simply made of ground hemp seeds, cacao powder, and low GI coconut sugar. What’s even better is that as Raised Spirit doesn’t use any grain-based proteins their products 100% Paleo too. Of course, their shake is already pretty tasty on its own but sometimes it’s nice to have a little post-workout treat. I’m a big chocolate lover but one of my favourite cakes growing up was the Black Forest Gateaux so I thought I’d create a delicious Black Forest Protein Milkshake that can be whizzed up in less than 1 minute using ingredients that are easy to get hold of or that you probably have already.
This gorgeous little Black Forest Protein Milkshake delivers roughly 12g of plant-based protein thanks to Raised Spirit’s yummy hemp protein powder with antioxidant rich cacao.
DISCLAIMER: Please note, I was sent some wonderful goodies from Raised Spirit, and paid real money, to create a delicious recipe for you all. All opinions are my own and 100% honest. For more info scroll to the bottom of this post.
The protein shake industry, especially the vegan market, is an absolute minefield to navigate around – they’re often packed with nasty fillers, processed sugars, or if you’re lucky enough to find one made from all-natural and unprocessed ingredients they often come with a huge price tag attached to them. This is why I absolutely love Raised Spirit – their shake has been stripped back to basics and uses one of the best vegan plant-based sources of protein – hemp seeds. Containing all nine essential amino acids, fibre, healthy fats (including the perfectly balanced ratio of omega 3 and 6 fatty acids) and minerals whilst antioxidant-rich raw cacao speeds up recovery meaning you get an amazing bang for your buck. Cacao is also a fab source of 4 scientifically proven ‘bliss chemicals’ that triggers the release of endorphins – those things that make you happy. It also contains 40 times the amount of antioxidants of blueberries and even more calcium than cow’s milk.
If like me you’re looking for simple ways to jazz up your protein shake then don’t worry you have certainly come to the right place – it doesn’t get much easier than this folks! All you need is your trusty blender, your favourite milk (I think cashew and almond are mega!), frozen cherries, and a little cocoa powder. No kitchen skills are required. Of course, if you’re feeling extra special you can throw in some vanilla powder or vanilla extract and top with whipped cream, chopped nuts, and even a drizzle of chocolate but I don’t know anyone either crazy or energetic enough to pull off such a ‘gramable’ shake post-workout. If you can then you’ve definitely not been working hard enough!
This gorgeous little Black Forest Protein Milkshake will deliver roughly 12g of protein depending upon what milk you decide to use but if you throw in a tablespoon of nut butter you can push that to 15g which I think we can agree is a lot better than eating plain tofu or boiled eggs. The shake itself is super smooth, sweet, chocolatey, and ice-cold making it perfect for these sweltering summer months and as it doesn’t use ice cream it’s a lot kinder on your waistline than other recipes. So, I hope you enjoy this shake as much as I do and if you do try it out please leave a little comment below to let me know what you think!

- 190g/1½ cups frozen cherries
- ½ cup ice cubes
- 1 cup milk (almond/cashew work best)
- 30g/2 tbsp Raised Spirit Hemp Protein Powder with Cacao
- Roughly chopped/grated dark chocolate (85% cacao solids or above)
- Chopped nuts
- Fresh cherries
- Place all of the milkshake ingredients into a high-speed blender in the order listed. Blend on high until smooth. You may need to scrape down the sides a couple of times with a silicone spatula and blend again to ensure a thorough blend. Pour into a glass and enjoy!
I purposely haven't added any sweetener into this so if it's not sweet enough try adding a dash of stevia.
*All cup measurements used are UK cup measurements and so 1 cup = 250ml. Please note that the prep time is largely setting time.
