Myprotein Women’s Velocity Review

I have to say I’m a little bit chuffed to bring you another non-food related review – this time a couple of items from the Myprotein Women’s Velocity range. It’s a brand new, fresh range of premium activewear with a functional focus on those who partake in HIIT, cycling and running. It has a lot of cool customisable elements and uses the most gorgeous high shine fabric that will leave you looking like a real-life superhero. Men don’t feel left out though, because there’s a whole range for you right over here too.

Now, I always opt for black when buying sportswear but this time I went outside my comfort zone and opted for the most beautiful burgundy shade that Myprotein has dubbed as ‘Claret’. It’s a sort of brighter burgundy but the colour shifts with the light due to the reflective nature of the high shine fabric. So, just a mental note – the colour you see in my photos isn’t fully representative of the colour in natural light. It’s sort of slightly more muted. Either way, I’ve been wearing the set for a few days now and keep on getting compliments on its colour – and the shine – people really love that shine.

I’m sure you all know by now that I love to keep things as green as possible so when I saw that Myprotein is now packing their clothes in a bioplastic packaging derived from sugarcane, rather than oil, I jumped for joy a little bit. This means that the mailers are produced from renewable resources that will make a significant contribution to reducing greenhouse gas emissions throughout the chain. They’re carbon neutral but aren’t compostable, although 100% recyclable which is certainly a step in the right direction.

Anyway, enough of my rambling let’s get straight into this awesome review and see how the new Velocity range faired.

Myprotein Women’s Velocity Review

When looking for the perfect sportswear they have to have great; breathability, wicking, flexibility, reflectivity, and be lightweight. You’ll be pleased to know that the Velocity range hits all of these key criteria head-on. Before I get into my review of the individual pieces let’s take a look at what key features Velocity has to offer below.

The Velocity Range’s Key Features:

  • Available in 3 different colours; Black, Claret, and Light Blue.
  • Available in sizes XXS-XXL (6-18).
  • High shine fabric with reflective detailing for safety.
  • Ventilation elements for high heat areas.
  • High performing fabrics with great breathability and wicking qualities.

Women’s Velocity Sports Bra in Claret, RRP £32.00

Okay, so the first thing I thought when I opened up this sports bra from its packet was simply ‘wow’. There are so many features to optimise your comfort that it truly does make the most customisable, well-fitting sports bra that I’ve ever owned.

The Women’s Velocity Sports Bra boasts some amazing features such as; removable insert pads, a thick supportive under band, adjustable elastic straps at back, and an adjustable hook and eye clasp at the centre-back. There is also a mesh insert under the bust for ventilation – because let’s face it ladies it’s sweat central under there when you’re working hard. I found this little bit of added ventilation amazing.

The cut of the bra itself is super flattering – I find as someone with pretty big lats that sports bras tend to cut in at the sides and leave my back fat spilling out but there was none of that going on… This is probably the best sports bra I’ve ever owned and the price is so reasonable for what you’re getting.

It has the most beautiful racerback fit but unlike most sports bras it still manages to fit in a customisable fit with those adjustable elastic straps. For those ladies who are more well endowed than me, you’ll be pleased to know that due to the thick under band the hook and eye clasp is 3 rows thick meaning more support for your beautiful tatas. For me, even with my B cups, high support is paramount. Myprotein state that the Velocity Sports Bra is a medium to high support bra and I feel that this is pretty accurate but I’d say definitely nearer to the medium side if you had a larger bust.

The bra is made of the silkiest smooth, high shine fabric that increases visibility but there’s also a reflective taping at the front princess seam too. The princess seam is the seam down the middle of each breast in case you didn’t know. (‘Cause I didn’t know either don’t worry.) The cut of the bra itself is super flattering – I find as someone with pretty big lats that sports bras tend to cut in at the sides and leave my back fat spilling out but there was none of that going on. Also, the straps taper in at the top, almost like a halterneck, and that always makes muscular frames look more feminine.

Myprotein’s perfectly fitting Velocity Sports Bra, complete with a mesh insert for breathability.

My bust ranges from a 34 to a 36 dependent upon what time of the month it is and how much I’ve been eating. I’ve got one boob smaller than the other (who doesn’t right?) and have a tendency to fall out of most bras because of this, but I felt safe and secure the whole time. I opted for a size small and the sizing was on point. I did have the bra done up a little too tight on the hook and eye clasp for the photos but I’ve changed that to the loosest one and it’s a perfect fit.

Care wise this bra is super easy to look after – just pop it on a cold wash (30°C) inside out and leave to line dry. You can’t tumble dry it but due to the wicking nature of the material, it will air dry relatively fast.

This is probably the best sports bra I’ve ever owned and the price is so reasonable for what you’re getting. It’s worth noting that I shot without the removable insert pads purely because the harsh lighting I was using made them show up – in real life they really didn’t. The same with the side of the bra and where the pad would be inserted, it shows up quite visibly in my shots but no in natural lighting. I have to use some pretty heavy lights just to get my shots and you’re not likely to ever wander into a gym where you’re quite literally being blinded so don’t worry!

I’d score the Velocity Sports Bra a 10/10 on functionality and 9/10 on fit.

Women’s Velocity Leggings in Claret, RRP £46.00

When looking for sports leggings I look for quite a few important properties; material transparency, a stash pocket, and the ability to stay put being the main ones. Oh, and no camel toe. Being a woman with a rather large derriere I have to ensure nobody is getting an eyeful of my thong and giant butt cheeks. Whilst I’m sure there’s many a man out there that wouldn’t complain I’m out here trying to get fit and not train to be a competitive flasher.

I took some rather hilarious photos of myself bending over, squatting, you name it and it all just looked like I was shooting a budget porno but I wanted to make sure you guys could see how opaque the leggings really were. Even with my harsh lighting, you couldn’t see the line of my thong. You’ll also see in the photo below that rather than the material sagging at the back it moulds to your body, leaving no gaps and therefore no way the leggings can slip down either. The only issue I had butt wise was that the seam that is supposed to sit under the butt cheeks kept riding up halfway over them, thankfully it doesn’t look too bad but it wasn’t the perfect fit I’d dreamed of (look at the above photo to see what I mean).

Having a small waist and big hip measurement means that any leggings or running tights have a tendency to fall down whilst I’m trying to run, jump, or pretty much do any exercise, but there was none of that with the Velocity Leggings.

There’s an inner key pocket that fits into the inside of the waistband at the front but this would only hold a single small key comfortably. The leggings also feature a zip-up stash pocket at the back of the waistband that will hold all of your keys, spare change, gels, and/or other small belongings. This was a little bit shallow for my liking and I personally love one that can hold a phone, although these days those phone harnesses look like the way forward. You might be able to get a very slim MP3 player in there though which is always a bonus.

I like to feel secure otherwise I lose focus and my workouts never go so well so I often look for reinforced waistbands or ones with a drawcord. So, I bet you can only imagine how excited I was to see that the Velocity Leggings come with a drawcord to optimise the fit around the waist.  The waistband is also super thick and supportive so they really stay in place. I also love the fact that you can choose to wear the drawcord either on the outside of the legging or on the inside simply by threading through a little hidden slit in the fabric. Having a small waist and big hip measurement means that any leggings or running tights have a tendency to fall down whilst I’m trying to run, jump, or pretty much do any exercise, but there was none of that with the Velocity Leggings.

My lockdown fat rolls and bubble butt in full swing but no thong to be seen…

There were a few other cool key features such as breathable mesh inserts behind the knees, a reflective seam, and also the option to turn up the bottom of the hem to reveal a small reflective strip at the outer side of the ankle for added visibility when running in the dark. The logo at the front is also reflective too. I feel like the high shine fabric adds to being more visible overall but I haven’t tested this.

Size-wise I went with a medium, I’ve got a 28″ waist although this can fluctuate within half an inch either way. I’ve also got a hip measurement that’s now in excess of 40″ (I don’t even want to guess what it is) and these leggings still fit. I often struggle with sizing in most things because my hip to waist ratio is so extreme, but I feel great in these leggings, and most importantly – comfortable.

Having mum tum I really only like high-waisted styles, again I seem to struggle to find leggings that will stay up over my belly button but thanks to the drawcord these did, but only just. If you’re any taller than me or have a super long torso then you’ll probably find these are mid-rise. The model on the site is 5’11” and the leggings fall pretty low on her. I also have an almost 35″ inside leg (this was closer to 36″ in my youth) and the leggings lie about 2″ above my ankle bone. I sometimes find that leggings sit on my shin so again, bravo Myprotein! Overall the leggings were almost a perfect fit, I’d love to see them in different lengths for different heights – i.e. a petite and tall range.

I’d score the Velocity Leggings a 10/10 on functionality and 8/10 on fit.

The Verdict

Performance-wise the Women’s Velocity range knocked it out of the proverbial park. I didn’t get too cold whilst running outside on a chilly night and when swinging my kettlebells indoors I didn’t feel like a big ball of sweat. The range so comfortable it’s crazy, I can sometimes get a stomach ache with drawcord leggings but the Velocity leggings have the perfect amount to stretch to them that allows them to form to your body and move with you. This is something I haven’t really seen before and was probably my favourite thing about the range, other than the high shine Iron Man looking fabric that is.

I feel like no matter what your sport this range will probably be suitable for you. The material is flexible enough for yoga, durable enough for HIIT, Crossfit or even no-gi BJJ, and absolutely functional enough for running. Overall I’m beyond impressed with the style and functionality this range offers and I’d genuinely recommend it to any of my friends.

My only qualm is that the sizing isn’t as inclusive as it probably should be – as let’s be honest there are so many women out there working out that are larger than a size 18. Having said that the leggings definitely have enough stretch in them to probably extend to a size 20 but personally, I still don’t think that’s good enough.

At the time of writing this Myprotein currently are running their Payday sale and have almost 40% off both the sports bra and leggings. Plus you can use the code EXTRA for a further 25% off bringing the entire set down to £30. So if I were you I’d absolutely hurry!
