Honeypie Minerals Makeup Kit Review (Cruelty-Free, Vegan)

Although I’m big on clean and green makeup I very rarely take the time to review products as much as I do with skincare. I’ve been admiring Honeypie Minerals via Instagram for some time now so I thought I’d drop them an e-mail to see if they’d be up for sending me out some products for review. Much to my delight the wonderful founder Claudia e-mailed me back and agreed to send me out the Honeypie Minerals Makeup Kit to review… and we had a few lovely chats about food and green beauty too which was so amazing. Because Claudia is super lovely she has provided you guys with a 10% off discount code – just enter ‘GOTSA10’ at the checkout.

About Honeypie Minerals

Honeypie Minerals was founded by the beautiful and talented Claudia Keogh after she started to experience problems such as acne and oily skin from using high street products. She began to realise that it was the toxic ingredients that they contained which were aggravating her skin so she set about formulating her own products. Claudia handcrafted her own mineral makeup for personal use but before she knew it her friends and family were all wearing it too and so Honeypie Minerals was born.

Honeypie Minerals only uses natural, high-performance ingredients that are free from bismuth oxychloride, talc, rice powder, oils, starch, synthetic harsh chemicals, boron nitride, silica, parabens, nano-particles, additives, fragrance, preservatives, and animal derived ingredients.

Honeypie Minerals Makeup Kit, £49.99

The Honeypie Minerals Makeup Kit contains a whopping 12 full-sized products – 6 of which are from the Honeypie makeup range and the rest are a selection of EcoTools brushes and a fabric cosmetic pouch to carry everything in. It’s the perfect clean beauty makeup kit because all of the decisions have been made for you, other than picking your foundation shade of course. If you want to customise the colours in your kit you can by popping an e-mail over to the Honeypie Minerals team telling them what you want in your order. Take a look below at the contents and what they are all about:

  • Foundation (10g Sifter Jar), RRP £13.99 – The Honeypie Minerals Foundation has an ultra-lightweight formula making it suitable for all skin types. Due to it containing zinc oxide it is great for providing protection from UV-light exposure. You get to pick your shade of foundation so to make the kit fully customisable. The foundation was also GOLD WINNER of The Green Parent Natural Beauty Awards in 2018.
  • Candy Blusher (3g Sifter Jar), RRP £7.99 – The Honeypie Minerals Blushers were the BRONZE WINNER of The Green Parent Natural Beauty Awards in 2018. They come in 5 different shades, and there’s also a pearlescent highlighter powder too. The shade Candy is a pale pink that gives a soft, feminine look.
  • Yellow Corrector (3g Sifter Jar), RRP £7.99 – The Honeypie M‌inerals Yellow Corrector helps to conceal dark undereye circles, age spots, and melasma. You can apply it under your makeup to brighten your eyes and neutralise any discolouration of the skin.
  • Green Corrector (3g Sifter Jar), RRP £7.99 – The Honeypie Minerals Green Corrector neutralises pink and red tones, providing coverage for concealing redness, rosacea, blemishes, broken capillaries, scars, and imperfections.
  • Latte Eyeshadow (1g Sifter Jar), RRP £5.99 – The shade Latte is a light brown colour that’s neutral although I feel it is slightly cool, but that’s just me. It’s great for a delicate everyday look but can also be built up to create a smoky eye. It gives a crease-free matte finish and can be applied both wet and dry. The Honeypie Minerals Eyeshadow is available in 8 different shades.
  • Smokey Black Eyeshadow (1g Sifter Jar), RRP £5.99 – This is the same product as above but in the shade black. It’s perfect when used in conjunction with the EcoTools Angled Eyeliner Brush as an eyeliner as well as creating a mean smoky eye that’s perfect for a night out.
  • EcoTools Powder / Blush Brush, RRP £7.99 – 100% vegan and PETA Cruelty-Free Approved brush made from super-soft Taklon bristles that deliver just the right amount of blush powder. The rest of the brush is made from recycled aluminium ferrule and the handle from sustainable bamboo.
  • EcoTools Concealer Brush – This concealer brush usually comes as part of a 2 piece set so it doesn’t have an RRP value. It has nice and sturdy bristles that are perfect for applying both the yellow and green correctors but also for concealing with Honeypie’s mineral foundation.
  • EcoTools Angled Eyeliner Brush – Again this comes as part of a 2 piece Brow Duo Set. It’s perfect for doing a thick cat eye with the Smokey Black Eyeshadow but you can also use it to fill in and define the brows with your favourite brow powder.
  • EcoTools Eye Shading Brush – You can use this brush to apply your eyeshadow base colour to the lid and also highlight the brow bone. Again this is part of a set of brushes.
  • EcoTools Lash & Brow Spoolie Groomer Brush – You can use the Spoolie to comb and smooth out stray brows but also to separate out lashes. This comes in handy when layering up your green beauty mascara for a more dramatic effect as it can clump toward the edges. Part of the Brow Duo Set.
  • EcoTools Cosmetic Case – This isn’t available to buy separately but is part of the Six Piece Starter Set with the 5 above brushes. It’s a cute little button up fabric pouch made from natural materials that I’m pretty sure is washable. It’s perfect for storing your brushes in and a few makeup items too.

The Correctors

I have to confess, I haven’t used a colour corrector in years, and even when I did it was a cream corrector so this has been a whole new experience for me. After having Anya both my skin and hair have changed drastically, and even though she’s now 5 I don’t think those changes are going to ever reverse. The main problem I have is an uneven skin tone – I have melasma across my forehead, certain patches of pinker skin across my cheeks, darkness around my nose and then a few capillaries on the side of my nose too.

The yellow corrector did such a great job at neutralising my melasma and darkness around my nose. It really covered up my under my eyes too so I was mega impressed by that. The only thing I found was that it was very easy to apply too much to the undereye area – that is I sometimes ended up looking too bright in that area but after some practice, I’ve gotten a lot better at it. The green corrector wasn’t as pigmented but it certainly covered all the redness easily, in fact, I felt like I had to apply more of this one to gain the best coverage. Once I applied my foundation I found that I looked utterly flawless – it was amazing!

How to apply:  It’s really important when using mineral powders to ensure that you have a fully clean and exfoliated face. Make sure your moisturiser has fully soaked into your skin, and if in doubt leave at least 10 minutes before applying. Remember  – correctors come first unless you are doing a heavy eye makeup look in which case apply your eyeshadow and liner first then use your correctors.  A little goes a long way. It’s best to load a small to medium-sized makeup brush, or concealer brush for smaller hard to reach areas, with the product and tap off the excess before applying to the problem areas, then blending thoroughly before applying your mineral powder foundation.

If you use a liquid or cream foundation you might want to apply your correctors afterwards as you would a finishing powder. If you don’t you’ll probably find that things end up slightly patchy. I’ve dabbled with using them first then adding the foundation and then using them again after but the best method definitely seemed to be using them at the end and then covering with a layer of finishing powder to set.

The Foundation

I used mineral powder foundation quite a lot throughout my 20s but once I hit my 30s I found that it just started to sit in my creases and just make my skin feel a bit taught and nasty. So, I have to admit I was a little bit dubious. The Honeypie Minerals foundation is actually quite moisturising as far as mineral powders go, I’m guessing this is as it doesn’t contain any rice powder but I’m not entirely sure. I use more powder on my forehead as it always gets really oily throughout the day and it stops my fringe from getting lank as a cream foundation would do. I really loved the finish but found that it looked smoother and at its best with a setting spray – I just use the Lily Lolo Makeup Mist and spray it across my face in an ‘X’ motion a couple of times after I’ve finished applying all of my makeup, then leave it to dry. This leaves you with a nice dewy look which is what I prefer. If you like a more matte look then don’t worry about using a setting spray. My favourite thing about this foundation is that it protects against UV rays too which is so important when you’re in your mid-30s like me!

How to apply:  After using your colour correctors it’s time to conceal under your eyes with your foundation. Tap some of the foundation powder into the lid, then load your concealer brush, tap off the excess and pat the foundation under your eyes. Next, load a kabuki brush, tap off the excess and then apply in a sweeping motion into your cheeks, forehead, chin, and nose. Load your kabuki brush once more with some more foundation, tap the excess again, and buff into your entire face (including eyes) until fully blended. Don’t forget to blend into your jawline and down your neck, as well as out toward your ears. When you finish your whole face tap some powder all over to set.

The Blush

Oh my, powder blush you are my enemy. Okay, so these blush powders are really pigmented. I found the blusher brush a little tough to use and I had to use the world’s smallest amount of blusher ever to ensure I wasn’t going full blown clown. I found that pinching the end of the bristles was the best approach for applying so I’d recommend using a more tapered and thinner blush brush then buffing out with a larger brush. The product itself is beautiful and I love that you don’t need to use too much product to achieve a really gorgeous and healthy glow – it also means your blush will last for a year. I’m more used to cream blushes but the staying power of the powder blush really won me over.

How to apply:  Load your blusher brush with a very small amount of product and tap off the excess as you did with your foundation. Using a circular motion apply the blusher to the apples of the cheeks then sweep in an upwards motion towards the ears. I always find it easier to start from the bottom of my apples and sweep up and out to prevent going too close to my eyes and looking like a clown.

The Shadows

The shadows again are so pigmented – the shade Latte is quite a cool to a neutral tone. As I have a neutral/olive skin tone it wasn’t an issue for me but I think if you’re much warmer it may not be the shade for you. It was so easy to apply and gave me mega 80s chic vibes which I loved. I like to team it up with my Axiology lippie in Worth which is like a warm red with tangerine/terracotta hues. All I need now is a poodle perm to match! The staying power of the shadow is really impressive, it doesn’t crease, and you can build it from a chic daytime look to a really glamorous smoky eye. The shading brush does a really great job of buffing out the shadow but I’d personally buy 2 brushes – one to apply and one to blend.

I’ve only used the shade Smokey Black as a liner so far. I like to line my eye and smudge it out a little. You can also apply the shadows wet to increase the pigment and increase the staying power but I prefer the more shaded effect. The flat angled liner brush that comes in the kit is thicker than my other angled liner brush that I own so it does create a fairly thick line but it looks beautiful. You will get a little fallout when applying so do your eye makeup first before applying the correctors and foundation and pop a piece of tissue under your eye if you can to catch the fallout. The powder doesn’t smudge throughout the day and create panda eyes so for me that was an absolute winner.

How to apply: Apply a light veil of foundation to your eyelid with the concealer brush to act as a primer. Then, take your mineral eyeshadow and eyeshadow brush then dab it into the shadow and tap off any excess. Apply it to your lid starting from the outer crease sweeping inward. Use light, slightly downward strokes rather than circular motions. Hold a tissue under your eye to catch any fallout.

To line dip your angled brush into the eyeshadow, tap off the excess then place the brush towards the innermost corner of the eye and use small, feathered strokes towards the outer corner. If you have a similar eye shape to myself start from the middle or slightly further out and line.

If applying wet: Dampen brush with a few drops then dip the damp brush into your eyeshadow. Swirl your brush into the lid to create a creamy paste then apply.

The Brushes

The brushes are great value for money and are a fantastic starter kit, especially if you’re new to applying powder makeup. I’ve spent most years just using my fingers to apply my makeup so it’s been a nice experience to get stuck in with some brushes. The EcoTools range is made from recycled materials such as recycled aluminium and plastic and is 100% cruelty-free and vegan. They also use renewable bamboo for their handles too. The packaging is made of 100% tree-free paper made with 80% bamboo fibres and 20% cotton. So, as far as sustainability goes they’re pretty great but as far as performance goes they aren’t the best brushes in the world. They certainly aren’t the worst either.

I found the brow spoolie, eye shading, and angled flat liner brushes were my favourite, the blusher brush is good quality but felt slightly too large to be precise with. I think it would make an amazing foundation brush though. The concealer brush felt almost too dense to use for powders but when I’ve used it with my existing foundation it has worked really well for tidying up brows and concealing around the nose. I’d recommend getting another shading brush to use for concealing with powders. The cosmetic case is super cute and holds everything you need in one neat little package which I loved.

The Verdict

The Honeypie Minerals Makeup Kit is so impressive for the price – especially when you factor in that they protect from UV rays, the packaging is recyclable, and the products are even delivered in little black paper bags -I love it! The kit itself performs just as well as high-end products that I have used both in the toxic world of beauty and organic beauty. I can’t find much to fault about it – just maybe that my face shape required me to use a slightly different selection of brushes but as a starter kit for someone dipping their toe into the world of clean beauty it is utterly perfect. The shade range for the foundation is flexible but I’d love to see much darker shades for darker skin tones.  I love the products and I’ve definitely become a powder foundation fan – so long as I use my setting spray every couple of hours that is. It leaves an almost airbrushed effect and you can go from light to heavy coverage depending on your needs. I’ll definitely be buying some more eyeshadows from Honeypie Minerals in the future because they are so pigmented and easy to apply.

In my photos, I’m wearing all of the products from the kit but it’s worth noting that I’ve popped a little of RMS Living Luminizer onto the high points of my face and also along my chin and cupids bow for a much more dewy look. I’m currently trying out Jane Iredale’s Brow Gel in Brunette but as you can see it’s just a tad too warm for my face. Mascara is Green People’s Volumising Mascara – I literally haven’t bothered trying many other mascaras as not much can compare! Oh, and on my lips is Honeypie Minerals’ Lip Conditioner in Flower Child.

All of the Honeypie Minerals products use 3 main ingredients; mica, titanium dioxide, and zinc oxide. All of these ingredients are great for skin health due to them being anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory so they are perfect for all skin types and won’t make you break out. If you have acne-prone skin this is the perfect kit for you as it will allow your pores to breath and will absorb any excess oil. It’s great for teenagers and my 13-year-old loves the foundation so much – it doesn’t take her long to pop a little powder on her face and get out of the door for school on time.

If you are looking for a complete kit to throw into your handbag then look no further than Honeypie Minerals – their products are utterly beautiful and so simple to use.
