Homemade Berry Nakd Bar Recipe (Paleo, Raw Vegan, Gluten-Free)

These days there don’t seem to be enough affordable but healthy snacks around. Everyone loves a good Nakd Bar, although they are pretty darn pricey, and Anya (my youngest) is utterly obsessed with them. In fact, so much so that we were buying in a couple of boxes a week without even realising it, but recently I’ve been hard pressed for cash and so have had to stop buying them. After a long hard think and 5 billion tantrums, I decided to recreate them myself by purely looking at the ingredients label.  To be honest I don’t know why I didn’t do this a long time ago as I’m not one to buy packaged goods – especially not plastic wrapped ones – and it’s always cheaper to make things yourself as you can bulk buy ingredients plus you aren’t paying for extra packaging, marketing, and overall product design.

My homemade Berry Nakd Bar recipe is made with just 4 simple ingredients and tastes just as good as the real thing (if not better)!

As I had some freeze-dried strawberry powder laying around I decided to make the Berry Nakd Bar – usually, it’s made with raspberries but I knew Anya wouldn’t mind at all so long as it remotely resembled her favourite treat. Thankfully, she loved them, in fact, she said that they tasted even better than the original ones and my other 2 agreed. So definitely a winner! I now make up new batches in the morning before she goes to nursery if I’ve run out of them (or forgotten to make them over the weekend) because they are soooo, so simple and fast to make.  It’s also good fun to get the kids involved because they can easily weigh out the ingredients with you and throw them into the food processor (with careful supervision of course!). If you opt for deglet noor dates over the regular ones you’ll want to keep your bars chilled otherwise they get a little floppy – I use them because I think they taste better but it’s down to personal preference. I really wouldn’t opt for Medjool dates as they are even stickier and carry a much more caramel punch than regular ones.

This cheeky face says it all! (It was so hard to stop her from eating it…)

Feel free to play around with this recipe if you’d like – try out a different freeze dried fruit powder or another type of nut, and for an extra special treat dip the ready-made bars into raw chocolate. I think doubling up the freeze-dried fruit powder makes them super delicious but obviously, if you’re on a budget it’s not the best thing to do! Although I made these for my 4-year-old daughter it doesn’t mean that adults can’t enjoy them either. They make for great pre- or post-workout snacks and good if you find yourself on the go constantly. You don’t have to faff around and shape them into bars you can just roll them into balls and go. I chose to weigh mine out into 35g portions to keep the portion size the same but it’s totally up to you if you want to do this. Personally, I have poor portion control anyway but when it comes to kids I think it’s important to stay on top of how much sugar they’re eating – even if it is unprocessed and natural.

Do you make your little ones their own snack? I’d love to hear about it! Hey! Do you think it would be possible to make these with defrosted frozen raspberries? Or do you think the mixture would be too wet?

Hey Thea, thanks so much for the question. Unfortunately it would end up too soggy. But if you’re struggling to get freeze dried fruit powders maybe see if you can get dried raspberries and replace the raisins with them instead. Then add a small squeeze of lemon juice for a little tang! Hope this helps xx
